What are the advantages and disadvantages of polycarbonate roofing?

Polycarbonate, commonly abbreviated as PC, is a tough thermoplastic resin, usually produced using bisphenol A and phosgene. Now a production method that does not use phosgene has been developed, and it has been industrialized in the early 1960s. In the late 1990s, large-scale industrial production was realized. It is now the second-largest engineering plastic whose output is second only to polyamide. Its name comes from the CO3 group inside. Polycarbonate is used in decks, garages, terraces, sheds and greenhouses. Polycarbonate roof panels are also often used for swimming pool covers or roofs of industrial warehouses.

Polycarbonate has the following advantages:

1. Good light transmittance: The light transmittance of clear corrugated roofing can reach up to 89%, which is as good as glass. UV-coated panels will not produce yellowing, atomization or poor light transmission in the sun. After ten years, the loss of light transmission is only 6%, while the loss rate of PVC is as high as 15%-20%, and the glass fiber 12 %-20%.

2.  Strong impact resistance: The impact strength is 250-300 times that of ordinary glass, 30 times that of acrylic plates of the same thickness, and 2-20 times that of tempered glass. There is no crack when polycarbonate corrugated roofing sheets are dropped down from high ground.

3. Anti-ultraviolet rays: One side of 16 ft polycarbonate roof panels is coated with anti-ultraviolet (UV) coating, and the other side has undergone anti-condensation treatment, which integrates anti-ultraviolet, heat insulation and anti-drip functions all in one. It can block ultraviolet rays and is suitable for protecting valuable artworks and exhibits from ultraviolet rays. There are also PC boards made with a double-sided UV special process, which is suitable for special flower planting and environments with higher requirements for UV protection.

4. Light weight: The specific weight of the corrugated polycarbonate plastic roof panel is only half that of glass, saving the cost of transportation, handling, installation and supporting frame.

5. Flame-retardant: According to national standards GB50222 to 95, the PC board is flame-retardant grade 1, namely B1 grade. The ignition point of the clear polycarbonate roofing is 580℃, and it will self-extinguish after leaving the fire. It will not produce toxic gas during combustion and will not promote the spread of fire.

6. Sound insulation: Clear polycarbonate roofing has obvious sound insulation effects, which is better than glass and acrylic panels of the same thickness. Of the same thickness, the sound insulation of PC panels is 3-4DB higher than that of glass. Internationally, it is the material of choice for highway noise barriers.

7. Weather resistance: The corrugated clear plastic roofing can maintain stable in the range of -40°C to 120°C. After 4000 hours of artificial weathering test, the degree of yellowing was 2, and the light transmittance decreased by only 0.6%.

Disadvantages of polycarbonate

1. High price is one of the main disadvantages of corrugated perspex roofing sheets, because it is much more expensive than glass and other plastics.

2. The polycarbonate corrugated roof panel is not very resistant to scratches, and abrasions of the surface. If you are not careful, dents may be produced on the surface.

3. They are also highly sensitive to abrasive cleaners, alkaline cleaning products and solvents. Therefore, you must be very careful to avoid  substances containing acetone(such as organic solvents).

4. The manufacturing process of clear corrugated fiberglass roofing panels is not very environmentally friendly and requires a high processing temperature. In addition, it also needs phosgene and chlorine. Phosgene has a bad effect on human health, phosgene is also bad for the environment, and chlorine also has bad effects on human health. As a result, some precautions must be taken to protect workers during the manufacturing process.
