What is the economic impact of aluminum?

Background

The aluminum industry contributes $174 billion to the U.S. economy (nearly 1% of GDP), and supports nearly 700,000 American jobs. There is no doubt that aluminum is one of the few materials that affects everyone in the country. Strong, lightweight and recyclable, aluminum is a material uniquely suited to meet the needs and challenges of the 21st century.

Aluminum sheet plate is the most widely used form of industrial aluminum and is used in aerospace (aircraft aluminum sheet for skins), transportation (automotive body sheets), packaging (tanks and ends), and construction (building facades). Nowadays, aluminum alloy sheet is well positioned in the U.S. and global markets. Even, marine grade aluminum sheet meets the U.S. marine’s highest performance standards. 7075 aluminum plate is used for storage tanks in many industries in part because aluminum alloy sheet metal gains strength at super cold temperatures.

The aluminum industry creates jobs

More than 166,000 workers are directly employed in the aluminum industry. In the United States, the production, processing and use of aluminum support 659,000 jobs. The average annual salary of an aluminum worker exceeds the national average. Indirect jobs created by the aluminum industry added $44 billion in wages and benefits to the economy. While there have been significant job losses in some parts of the industry in recent years due to overproduction of aluminum in China, these losses have been offset by growth in downstream sectors such as flat roll products, extruded products and foundries.

The aluminum industry generates $70 billion a year in direct economic output. If all suppliers and related business functions are taken into account, the industry's economic output is $172billion.

Aluminum recycling creates economic value

Recycling aluminum can save more than 90 percent of the energy costs of primary production. Aluminum is 100 percent recyclable, which makes metal the most recyclable of all materials. Recycled aluminum retains its properties indefinitely and is the only material in the consumer processing process that costs more than its own collection.

The recycling industry has matured and is growing. The industry's recycling infrastructure is mature and profitable, making it ideal for aluminum-intensive products. Since the industry was established, more than 70 percent of the aluminum produced has been recycled and continues to be used.

Recycled aluminum cans are worth more than $800 million. Each year, the aluminum industry pays more than $800 million for empty aluminum cans. On average, 113,000 aluminum cans are recycled every minute. The aluminum can recycling program enables charitable organizations and groups to receive funding to strengthen programs and support projects that have been around for decades.

Driving the economy forward

Ford released the all-aluminum-body F-150 in 2015. The truck shed 700 pounds. This weight reduction through 2024 aluminum plates will enable Ford’s trucks to improve fuel efficiency, lower overall cost of operation and continue America’s drive to reduce U.S. expenditures on foreign energy resources.

Hangzhou Saining Polycarbonate Sheet Co., Ltd. was founded in 1997, a manufacturer that specializes in producing various kinds of high-quality aluminum alloy sheets and plates (such as 3mm alloy sheet and 2mm alloy sheet) with different aluminum plate sizes.
